a social network for members to learn and apply the power of digital media arts as a tool for civic action. In 2008, we started wihh 16 youth from Chicago as a 6-week apprenticeship program where they learned to use digital media to become voices of change in their community. The result was a community media organization producing socially conscious media.
So we got the idea that we could design and build a social networking platform that would serve as a medium to share and exchange youth media works in a community of mentor, teacher and peer allies that could respond to their interests in a way they currently are not able to do. The Word.Sound.Life. Social Network was created as a result and now consists of approximately 430 users (youth, artists, media-makers and mentors) from several cities around the world.
The community need this project address is the chronic lack of access and synergy to computing resources and trained professionals who can productively integrate them in their teaching and learning activities involving youth.
Our Process
WordSoundLife's process is to build lasting community links between artists, teachers, youth, organizers, media professionals and knowledgeable community mentors. This hybrid model connects youth to resources that they would not ordinarily reach, whether face-to-face or online. The social network is simply an extension of this goal.
How Can You Participate?
- Host a Word.Sound.Life. Event at your school, gallery or community center
- Donate Equipment/Tools/Supplies for Digital Media Workshops
- Recruit mentors or youth to join the Word Sound Life network
WHO WE ARE
We are poets, musicians, educators, artists, organizers, teachers, mediamakers, dancers.
WHAT WE DO
Word.Sound.Life. creates opportunities for youth to connect with peers and mentors to work on digital media-arts projects that positively impact life in their community.
HOW WE DO
WE TEACH critical media skills to help learners of all ages share their story
WE HOST community events, workshops and summer apprenticeships
WE OFFER professional development, consulting and design services
The Pods
In the process of working in production teams (pods), youth learn how to do research, to conduct interviews, to write in a variety of genres and styles as well as how to work collaboratively, make informed decisions and give oral presentations — the list goes on. And the work is produced for an audience — whether it be a mural project, podcast, documentary or webzine — the work feels authentic to students, in ways that schoolwork oft does not.
The projects for each pod:
1. iSwagg: New Youth Times - Writing
Working with mentor John Lester from the Rank Squad, teens reflect on the current state of affairs in this webzine by youth for youth
2. Freedom Hour - Radio
A community radio project that promotes free speech and hip hop journalism through podcasting and web radio, done in collaboration with Afro Roots Hop

3. Music Is Healing - Arts/Performance
We're creating an artists, healers & performers collective to offer one-of-a-kind symposia, events and workshops on healing arts, meditation, nutrition, music & yoga
4. Bridging the Gap DVD - Video
Building on the Bridging the Gap Conference, this video will introduce a new way of creating job opportunities for youth to become leaders of social change by connecting with mentors and resources in their community
A participatory youth media challenge to design a talking drum interface that enables users to author, browse and review recordings
